A couple of days ago, the music blog spectrum was sent into a frenzy with the release of a new collaboration between producer Diplo and R&B legend Usher, entitled “Climax”. What it was for, nobody knew – but it was majorly sick all the same.
But on Saturday evening, dubstep producer Asa dropped this wonderful little rework of onto his official Soundcloud. Not straying too far from the vibe of the original, the addition of sweeping basslines and a garage-style drum beat adds an additional layer of undeniable brilliance. Diplo’s production on the original was top-drawer, so to try to improve it would normally be viewed as some sort of taboo – but Asa’s pulled it out of the bag here.
Usher’s vocal performance can’t go without a mention – after years in the game, this guy’s still got it. This track reminds me a little of some of the stuff off his older albums, but cast into the future. I appreciate that doesn’t make a lot of sense, but it’s nice to see he’s moving away from the Usher we’ve seen in more recent years (see “OMG” and “DJ Got Us Falling In Love” for some rather ‘interesting’ examples).
Sometimes they say less is more.
Asa’s collaborative release with With Joyful Lips & Stumbleine is out today in digital-land. Check out the EP sampler HERE and purchase links are in the description below the video. Get on that.
